ΜΙΑ ΕΙΚΟΝΑ ΧΙΛΙΕΣ ΛΕΞΕΙΣ

The big importance of the Ennea Odoi was revealed by the fact that very early the gold coin was minted, when the same thing did only the Fagre, which was a Ionic center and the Thasians in the Orreskeia. First choice for the topic was the sphinx, which was closely connected to the Dionysos worship, whose center was the Ennea Odoi.   Immediately  followed the monetary issue with the cattle, which belonged generally to the Edones. The Ennea Odoi residents chose the cow alone or together with the suckling calf.  These two issues together with the herons of the port of the Ennea Odoi covered the entire spectrum of subdivisions.

The sphinxes which were unearthed in the recent excavations in Amphipolis, simply connect the Hellenistic years to the coins found as belong to the 6th century BC. Dionysos and devotion to him together with his followers, the sphinxes were contemporary themes on coins at the time.

The maenads found during the excavations are clear proof relating to the existence of the Dionysos temple, as shown on coins found earlier in the same area.
